138 Years Young – Happy Birthday Talbot Heath!

The Talbot Heath school community were delighted to celebrate 138 years in education last week, led by new Headteacher Tracy Harris. Both the junior and senior school, along with staff and governors celebrated in the Lily Pond Quad, remembering Mary Broad, who founded the school in 1886, and her successors.

Opening with the traditional procession of the lighted TH birthday cake in the Hub during morning assembly, the day was also marked by enjoying the cake, and a special service of thanksgiving with pupils and staff. Upper 6 leavers were invited to a formal lunch with staff to officially mark the end of their school days at Talbot Heath.

In her address to the school, Mrs Harris said what an honour it was to be part of Talbot Heath’s unique history as headteacher. She acknowledged the founder Miss Broad, who ‘was well known for doing what she thought was right for her pupils. They were taken on nature walks, they played hockey and cricket, and learnt science in a laboratory, all activities that were unheard of in a girls’ curriculum at this time. Miss Broad was a Headmistress and a woman of conviction and principle. She was always looking ahead and preparing the girls for the future.’

Head of Junior school, Liz Pugh added, ‘I am sure Miss Broad would be very proud and reassured to know that Mrs Harris is now building on her legacy, determined to develop exciting opportunities for our pupils and remaining true and committed to the founding vision of a first class education for girls.’

‘Happy Birthday Talbot Heath!’
