Sports Profile: Lacrosse Club

Lacrosse – one of the oldest team sports in North America and originally played by native Americans – is a thriving club at Talbot Heath, thanks to the expertise of sports staff member, Mrs Newcombe. Recently, girls were offered a session of Pop Lacrosse, which is played with a moulded plastic stick and soft ball, providing another opportunity to experience a different sport, not usually found on the mainstream curriculum.

Lacrosse was first introduced to TH when Mrs Newcombe joined in 2001, after regularly playing herself at her previous school. Ever since, the Sports department has offered Lacrosse as an option to learn in some senior school lessons, alongside a weekly club that girls have enjoyed attending.

Mrs Newcombe said, ‘The girls that play, love the free running nature of the sport and the physicality. Traditionally, it was thought that lacrosse was much better for young ladies’ deportment than hockey! It is also different to other sports in that you can play behind the goal (like ice hockey) and so this offers another dimension to the game.’

Thanks go to Mrs Newcombe and the Sports department for offering a wide range of sports opportunities for the pupils; Upper 3 have recently enjoyed a skateboarding session, and a Fencing Taster Session will be offered to celebrate National Fitness Day this week.
