British Science Week at Talbot Heath

To mark British Science Week at Talbot Heath, the science department have offered a range of exciting activities to inspire future scientists across the school. The theme of the week was ‘Adapt and Change’ and many students were involved in experiments including fossils, food and urine!

A poster competition was the catalyst for launching science week, when Key Stage 3 students were asked to design a poster with this year’s theme:’ Adapt and Change’. They could interpret it in many ways, including how humans have adapted over evolution, or will in the future; how plants have adapted, or how humans have changed their use of fossil fuels, adapting to green energy. There were many fantastic entries and the overall prize-winner was Mia L [Upper 4] who focused on ‘Our Homes and Cities: A Journey Through Time’. The runners-up were Phoebe S, Martha G and Paige N [also Upper 4] with their poster on ‘The Galapagos Tortoises and how they adapted’. Congratulations, and thank you to everyone who entered.

Following this, Year 6 pupils enjoyed tracing fossils to investigate how plants have changed (evolved) over time to become their modern day counterparts. And the Upper 3 students investigated what food groups (such as carbohydrates, proteins, starch, lipids) were in a selection of different foods through observing colour changes that occurred in different tests using chemicals. The lesson focused on researching how much energy is stored in different foods; to measure this, pupils  burnt each food item and measured the change in temperature.

Also investigating were the Lower 5 students, who were tasked with testing urine to see how a diastix colour changes in different (fake) urine samples to identify which patient has diabetes.

Thanks go to the science department for organising these fun learning experiences.
