Psychology Students Sent To Prison

One of the Upper 6 option topics in Psychology is Forensic Psychology – this topic provides an insight into Criminology, Law, and the Justice System. The course covers the aims of custodial sentencing and the psychological effects of imprisonment; to inform their understanding the Lower 6 Psychology students visited Shepton Mallet prison, which closed in 2013 and is no longer a working prison.

Students had a guided tour of the wings and the disused execution chamber, and learnt about the media portrayal of the notorious Kray twins. They learnt about the history of the prison and historical methods of punishment, as well as spending some time trying to escape from locked cells whilst in handcuffs!

Thanks go to Dr Jolly for organising this unique educational visit.
