Last week, Head of Design and STEM Coordinator, Mr Morris, took 20 pupils from STEM club to participate in the annual Dorset schools Rotary STEM challenge at BCS school. There were 40 teams from many different schools in the local area competing at the event.
The pupils were challenged to engineer a solution to deliver an emergency aid shelter box across a ravine using limited resources including a motor, gears and sections of wood. It was a very challenging task with many teams in the competition not able to create a successful design within the time limit.
Mr Morris was pleased to announce that the Talbot Heath KS3 team won gold and the TH KS4 team won silver. They produced some outstanding work which wowed the judges.
He said: ‘All of the girls were an absolute credit to the school. Every group from TH produced a design that worked for the final test and they should be very proud of how well they did. We have been working very hard in STEM club since the start of the school year and it was lovely to see their hard work paying off.’ Adding, ‘Female engineers still only account for 16.5% of the UK’s engineering workforce. This has increased from 10% since 2010 but there is still a way to go. Hopefully we will see some engineers of the future from TH.’
