Drama Production: Picnic at Hanging Rock

A spellbinding and intriguing play brought to life by the sixth form drama students…

Congratulations to the drama department and students who were involved in the superb production of ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ last week.

Directed by Mrs McDonald and Mrs Cosgrove, the production was a chilling adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s 1967 classic historical fiction novel, set against the backdrop of 1900s Victoria, Australia. Seven performers struggle to solve the mystery of the group of female boarding school students who vanish at Hanging Rock on a Valentine’s Day, with their teacher. Euphoria and terror reverberate throughout the community, as the potential for history to repeat itself becomes nightmarishly real.

In this production, the students hoped to show the audience a mysterious and intriguing story; aiming to convey what a tragic incident such as this, can do to a society. They also hoped to leave the audience wondering for themselves what really happened on Hanging Rock.

Mrs McDonald said how proud she was of the girls: ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock was a challenging play to work on and the Sixth Form students rose to the occasion and worked with creativity and energy to bring to life the characters explored in the play. Ms Cosgrove and I are so proud of their dedication and congratulate them on the theatrical skills they brought to the performance. Special thanks are extended to Tallulah V and Holly S for stepping in and running the lighting and sound for the show, along with Miss Elford, who produced a superb video to accompany the opening scene of the play.’

Grateful thanks also go to the following for their help: Mr Dobree-Carey, Jill Mepham, the Finance team and front office.
