Pupils in 5D enjoyed an exciting day of Victorian-themed engineering challenges during their Junior Design Day this week. The day began with an exploration of the steam engine’s invention and its transformative impact on Britain and the world during the Industrial Revolution. They had the opportunity to see a real working model of a steam locomotive, gaining a hands-on understanding of how steam powers such machines.
Next, the students were introduced to some of Sir Dobbie’s inventive creations, which, unfortunately, didn’t quite go as planned — he often forgets to use a ruler and leaves out vital components! The pupils were then tasked with creating their own inventions to assist Sir Dobbie. Working in teams, they designed and built working models powered by miniature traction engines. In addition to constructing their models, they planned presentations and developed marketing materials.
In the afternoon, the challenge continued as they designed a new bridge, pushing their engineering skills and creativity to the limit. Overall, the day was a fantastic success, with pupils producing some remarkable results. Well done to everyone who participated!
Thanks go to Mr Morris and Mr Dobree-Carey for organising this fun and informative session.
