New York Trip – 13th – 17th December 2024

At the end of the Autumn Term, the Art and Drama departments took 23 students from the Lower 5, to the Upper 6 on a memorable school trip to New York City, covering an exciting itinerary packed with cultural experiences, iconic landmarks, and thrilling entertainment.

The first evening commenced with a visit to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., a lively restaurant offering a taste of Southern cuisine and a fun atmosphere. Later, the group ventured into the heart of Times Square, experiencing the dazzling lights, bustling crowds and vibrant energy of this iconic intersection.

On Saturday, we had a day dedicated to art and winter wonder beginning with a visit to the Guggenheim Museum, renowned for its unique spiral architecture and impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. Afterwards, the group enjoyed the picturesque setting of Central Park, gliding across the ice rink and soaking in the winter wonderland ambiance. The evening culminated with a captivating performance of the Broadway musical “Aladdin” after a visit to the majestic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, a symbol of holiday cheer.

The trip continued on Sunday with a scenic ride on the Staten Island Ferry, offering breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, including the iconic Statue of Liberty. A walk through the historic Wall Street district followed, providing insights into the financial heart of the city and providing further opportunities to admire the Christmas decorations that New York is so famous for. There was time dedicated to reflection and remembrance at the poignant 9/11 Memorial and exploration of the vibrant Chelsea Market, a haven for food enthusiasts and unique finds. As the day drew to a close, a leisurely stroll along the High Line, an elevated park built on a former railway line, provided stunning city views. The day concluded with awe-inspiring vistas of the city at night from the top of the Empire State Building.

The final day of the trip was devoted to art at the renowned Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), where students explored masterpieces of modern and contemporary art. We also managed to squeeze in a visit to Crumbl Cookies to sample their delicious cookies which didn’t disappoint.

This trip to New York City provided an enriching and unforgettable experience, combining cultural exploration, artistic splendour and exciting entertainment. We would like to thank the students for their great company on the trip. Grateful thanks also go to Mrs McDonald, Miss Coates and Miss Webb for their time, organisation of the trip and accompanying the students.
