Sixth Form subjects
The Sixth Form at Talbot Heath provides excellent teaching and achieves outstanding academic results. Students enjoy individual support and guidance from their tutors in a bright and friendly environment.
We know your daughters well and this enables us to support them throughout their studies and to provide them with expert advice when making their university and careers choices. Every year we also welcome a number of girls from other schools who quickly make new friends and settle into life in the Sixth Form.
We are extremely proud of the academic results attained by our Sixth Formers every year. The majority of students achieve A*-B grades at A-Level. We are frequently one of the best performing girls’ schools in Bournemouth and Poole at A-Level.
Entry requirements for the Sixth Form are a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 6 or above. The Sixth Form pupils who are attaining such excellent results have a broad and diverse academic profile, yet all are achieving and often exceeding their potential as a result of the education that they are receiving.
The school offers a wide range of Advanced Level courses from which students select usually three to study to AS level in the Lower Sixth. In the Upper Sixth we would expect girls to study three subjects. Our Sixth Form timetable is built around individual choices, so many subject combinations are possible. We do, however, urge girls to discuss options with parents, staff and career advisors to ensure that each individual’s programme of study is suited to her aptitude and future plans.
Students are divided into small tutor groups so that students can receive individual support and guidance from their tutors. Prospective medical students and veterinary students attend Med Soc whilst Oxbridge candidates attend sessions which encourage clear sighted debate and analysis. We offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is highly regarded by Russell Group universities. We have recently added Physical Education to the wide range of subjects offered at A level. Each year, Sixth Formers have an enrichment programme alongside their academic studies to prepare them for university life. Speakers from universities offer advice on personal statements and university applications. Students also receive advice on finance, health and practical skills as well as mindfulness sessions, self defense and yoga to contribute to their wellbeing.
Sixth Formers at Talbot Heath are encouraged to think independently and lessons are more like the seminars and tutorials that students will experience in Higher Education. The teaching and learning environment is less formal than for GCSE, and there are opportunities to explore ideas in a more relaxed atmosphere. Students have their own common rooms, do not wear uniform and can organise their own time.
